After a close game of Balloon Pop on Thursday, the students at Communication High School (CHS) prepared for the final day of Spring Spirit Week. The scoreboard was the closest it had ever been, with the seniors in first with 213 points, the freshmen trailing behind with 209, the juniors in third with 196 and the sophomores in fourth with 193. The final results all came down to the very last event, and a CHS classic – Lip Sync.
The theme of the day, “Opposites Attract,” had students paired in many different duos, from Yin-Yang to Spongebob and Patrick. These opposite pairings searched through the school to find the missing items for the final scavenger hunt of the week, which concluded with the freshmen in first, followed by the juniors, seniors and sophomores respectively.
With the results of the scavenger hunt, the freshmen were leading with a one-point cushion, then the seniors, juniors and sophomores. This meant that the winner of Lip Sync would be the ultimate victor of the week.
Once the bell rang at 1:30, students flooded the cafeteria to watch the fo performances that would determine the fate of the week.
The seniors were randomly selected to perform first, putting on their “Seniors in Space” Lip Sync. The performance featured seniors Charlotte Davie of Howell, Lindsay Gilbert of Wall, Brody Lippincott of Wall and Hannah Smolinski of Little Silver as astronauts voyaging through space. Songs included many space-esc themes, such as “Levitating” by Dua Lipa, and “Space Jam” by Quad City DJ’s.
Following the seniors were the juniors with their “Hollywood Beastiest” lip sync. The hosts of the night, Zach Pressler of Roosevelt, Brody Salowe of Ocean Township and Shawn Ribeiro of West Long Branch introduced many of the star studded guests and films featured. Opening up with an homage to “La-la Land” and grand performances emulating Jack and Rose from “Titanic.”
The freshmen followed with their “CHS Circus” theme, dancing to songs from, “The Greatest Showman” and “Circus” by Britney Spears. The story followed Class of 2028 advisors Melanie Sambataro and Nicholas Pellicano taking freshman Maddie Joines of Wallthrough different circuses.
To conclude the afternoon, the sophomores put on their “Pirates vs. Surfers” Lip Sync with various beach battles. Songs from “Teen Beach Movie” and Joe Graff of Spring Lake as the treasure-finding pirate, leaving the audience in an ever-lasting adventure.
After the final performances, the judges convened to vote on their picks. The final results awarded the seniors with first place standing at 323 points, followed by the juniors in second place with 293, freshmen in third with 284 and sophomores in fourth with 241.
After a week of fervent scavenger hunts, school-wide participation in daily themes and intensive lunch-time games, CHS’ Class of 2025 celebrated their historic sixth and final consecutive win.
