As the weather cools down, things have been heating up at Communications High School. With the 2012 Mock Election a mere two weeks away, this year’s candidates Matt Goldman, Taylor Walters, Adam Dorfman, and Emily Woods were eager to jumpstart their campaigns.
This past Tuesday, each member of the student body received their first election “buck”. This currency entitles each student to vote for his or her desired candidate. The candidates can they purchase advertising and other ways to enhance their campaign with the paper, green dollars adorned with a Big Bird picture where George Washington’s head usually is.
Many campaigns, like Jill Stein’s Green Party, use bribery as a form of getting election bucks. Sophomore Hannah Wallach, the campaign manager, handed out tempting emerald-colored cupcakes today at lunch. In return, the Green Party collected the hungry taker’s election buck.
However, committee meetings were not limited to only candidates and their proponents. On Tuesday’s, there was a total of four other meetings going on at the same time. This included “Super PACs” or the Political Action Committees who will “support or campaign against” the candidates, Common Cause who will ensure that the election is fair, the Election Bureau who will run the election, and UpperClassy who will report on the campaign, according to the election’s head, journalism teacher Andi Mulshine.
With the elections only beginning, the outcome of the 2012 CHS Mock Election is unsure, but the stage is set for the next two weeks.
