Flipkey.com, a trip advisor site, recently named the Jersey Shore as one of the nation’s top East Coast beach vacation spots. For some of us who live here year-round, though, the better getaway option may be to the west.
Rising junior Emma Neuwirth of Brielle travels to the Pocono Mountains every year. She finds sleep-away camps more appealing.
“I have been going since I was a very young age,” Neuwirth said. “I cannot imagine a summer without it.”
Located in Starlight, Pennsylvania, B’nai Brith Perlman Camp is one of many camps in the northeast region. According to Neuwirth, the sports, lake activities and even the outdoor adventures were not what drew her in.
“My friends, and the people I have met over the past five years are what brings me back here every year.”
Classmate Shannon Brown of Manasquan believes the Jersey Shore is the place to be in the summer.
“The beach is so relaxing,” Brown said. “I don’t have to have any schedule or any place to be. Summer is the only time where I don’t have to really worry about anything.”
For Brown, spending time with friends tops off the Shore summers for her.
And while seven weeks away from home without any television or social media interaction may not sound appealing to some, Neuwirth does not mind.
“It feels nice to take a break, put your phone down and not worry about anything. It is such a relief.”
