When the bell rang after first period on Friday, Sept 30, students cluttered the hallways to exchange their books at their lockers. Many students soon found a new addition to their locker.
From what would appear to be a school-wide coloring, single pieces of paper saying “Color me!” with a picture of the world, were hanging on nearly every locker. Some students laughed in response, while some took the papers that were taped to their lockers.
The posters had been part one of the two-part ad campaign for the upcoming National Art Honor Society splatter paint workshop.
“I wanted something fun and different, something people would really notice,” DeSomma said.
One person who did notice was Mr. Gleason, who said the clutter of posters left the school looking disheveled, something that would not appeal to those attending last Saturday’s information session.
By lunchtime, there were little to no posters left on the lockers
“The whole point of the ad campaign was ‘see the world in more than black and white’,” said activities coordinator Kira DeSomma.
“There were just too many of them around the school,” said Mr. Gleason, the principal. “There wasn’t any approval for the idea, no teachers or administrators, there wasn’t any permission given to these students to hang up the posters around the school.”
DeSomma said she takes full responsibility for the miscommunication, and though part one did not end as originally planned, part two of the advertisement will still be put up around the school, but this time using a smaller amount of colored posters.
For any of those interested, the NAHS splatter paint workshop will be held Oct. 13, right after school. The workshop is free, and anyone interested in participating can sign up outside of Mrs. Ortner’s room.
