Collan finds calling in music and videos

Snow covers the ground on a chilly 30 degree day in Wall, but freshman Katie Collan of Millstone arrives to school in a blue flannel, knee-high gray stockings and bright yellow shorts. Collan is known to CHS as “the freshman who always wears shorts,” but the curly-haired girl may be better summarized as “the freshman who makes music videos.”

Collan, self-described as “eccentric,” has been making YouTube music videos since she was “around eight or nine.”

“I started making YouTube videos when I was young because I admired others who had and wanted to emulate them,” she said. “I post animated music videos.”

Although citing no specific influences, Collan’s posted three music videos on her YouTube channel named Kenny Arlos.

The videos, in “TTR style,” feature characters from the online gaming website Toontown Rewritten, which the site describes as “a community revival of Disney’s retired multiplayer online game, Toontown Online.” After using character speech bubbles to narrate the songs, Collan compiles the videos using Corel VideoStudio Pro X7.

Collan said this love of making videos is one of the reasons she came to CHS.

“I applied to CHS to learn more about filming and piecing together videos,” she said. “I’m really excited for DV next marking period.”

But there are two parts to the term “music video.” The former, Collan said, is also a big part of her life.

Collan sings, and she plays three instruments. She has played the guitar since fifth grade, the recorder since third and the piano on and off her whole life.

“I started learning the guitar to make music for the songs I create,” she said. “I write any genre of songs; it’s always been fun to mix it up. But I especially love writing parodies of songs.”

Collan also said she listens to many different types of music and has been to several concerts.

“Music is something that I can’t exactly live without,” she said.

As for the shorts, Collan said she’s “not really sure why people care,” and had “no comment” as to why she always wears them.

But when it comes down to it, Collan’s music video shorts are a much more substantial topic than her bright yellow ones.
