Summer is just around the corner and with the warmer weather comes new fashion trends for the summer of 2021.

Many of the current fashion looks such as tennis skirts, oversized hoodies, joggers, chain necklaces and corsets come from popular influencers and trends on TikTok. This summer is no different.

The crochet craze on TikTok began in February with Harry Styles’ iconic JW Anderson crochet cardigan. Wanting to keep crochet in trend with warm weather approaching, people have begun to find ways to incorporate it into their summer wardrobes. Karen Blanchard, a writer from Where Did U Get That, predicts that crochet will be popular this summer after observing the rising trend.

“I bet you that crochet clothes are going to be the next ‘florals for Spring’ for a few years,” Blanchard said as she scrolled through her For You Page on TikTok.

Sophomore Hilary Garrett of Spring Lake is excited about the idea of crochet clothing. She plans on incorporating it into some of her outfits this summer.

“I actually love the look of the crochet tops,” Garrett said. “I think they’re super cute for layering and I just ordered two off Pacsun.”

Along with crochet, denim is expected to make a booming comeback. Whether it’s shorts or jackets, denim is a popular go-to style to pair with anything. Anna Laplaca, the Associate Editor of Who What Wear, a fashion news site, explains the rise of denim’s popularity.

“I think it’s safe to say that we really slowed it down on denim last year, turning instead to softer pants,” Laplaca said, “but start to think about bringing denim back into our lives in 2021. ”

Pop singer Avril Lavigne has been seen this month flaunting ‘90s loose fitting denim jeans, which are a returning style. In previous years, baggy jeans were a come-and-go look that many people admired, but now Lavigne is one of many who have begun to see the appeal of baggy boyfriend jeans once again.

Freshman Hannah Cohen of Little Silver loves baggy ‘90s inspired jeans, believing it should be a staple in winter outfits. She’s not too confident about how long the trend will remain popular as the temperatures rise, however Cohen is more focused on creating her own style this summer.

“I’m probably most excited to wear skirts and minidresses during the summer. I also love all beach inspired clothes because I go to the beach almost everyday,” Cohen said.
