What do the Try Guys and Maroon 5 have in common other than winning The Shorty Awards? That is right, a member of their group was outed and publicly humiliated for cheating on his wife.

The difference between the criticism that they received is how they present themselves in the public eye and how much of their relationship is on social media.

Ned Fulmer is a former member of the YouTube group “The Try Guys,” a group of men who went viral for “trying” activities out of their comfort zone. Fulmer became known as the “wife guy” since he consistently referenced her in episodes. Ariel Fulmer, his wife, became a frequent guest on the YouTube channel, dubbed a “Try Wife.” The couple went on to create content outside of their Try Guys pursuits, including a couples’ cookbook and a tour talking about healthy relationships.

Since the Try Guys often included Fulmer and his family in his content, fans were shocked when he appeared to be edited out of videos and pictures were shared of him kissing Try Guys producer Alexandria Herring. This has led to concerns over Ariel’s well-being as a product of being so prominent on Ned’s social media.

Junior Garret Stemetski of Wall believes celebrities should expect some criticism when they make their private lives public.

“If someone is willingly putting their life out there, they’re inviting themselves to be criticized,” Stemetski said.

On the other hand, Adam Levine led a somewhat private romantic life despite his popularity as the frontman for Maroon 5. Compared to Fulmer, Levine’s online presence is primarily focused on his music endeavors, activism and promotional content, with some photos featuring his wife, Behati Prinsloo, a Victoria’s Secret model. Despite this, after the news broke of Levine’s affair, there were news articles and memes made about Levine and his family’s situation.

Junior August Sullivan of Hazlet spoke about the dangers of having personal matters publicized.

“Especially if it involves families… it’s probably awful having that shown everywhere,” Sullivan said.

While Levine, and even his wife to some degree, are open to the public, their relationship and family are not. Levine’s family was still impacted even though they kept their life mostly private. Prinsloo and Levine have both made statements about working through this and maintaining their marriage. However, the criticism against Levine and his family has not stopped.

Maroon 5, one of the best-selling bands in history, are not known for the interactions between personalities and publicity of members. The Try Guys are the complete opposite, being a tight-knit, family-friendly group of guys who stumbled into fame. This forces a change in what makes The Try Guys popular and ruins their relationship and thus their ability to produce content, while Maroon 5 can continue to make music despite the controversies.

“With publicizing it you should expect people to make fun of you, and you can’t be surprised that it happens, ” Sullivan said.
