A day where you can get warm pancakes and waffles with whipped cream, fruit and syrup for school lunch: Pomptonian’s Pancake and Waffle Day. Although this offering seems kind, some students doubt it’s as perfect as it seems.
Since Pomptonian Food Service replaced Wall High School as CHS’s food vendor this September, the school has hosted three pancake and waffle days, the most recent one occuring on June 8, 2023.
Freshman Alice Ye of Homdel gave her opinion on the excitement of Pancake and Waffle Day.
“It’s unique from the usual lunch that we have, and it’s like a childhood experience, it’s nostalgic and it’s just special,” Ye said.
While many students look forward to this day, it does have its downsides.
“There was a club meeting that same day, so you’re just waiting to get the food and then having to go to that meeting while eating at the same time,” junior Khanh Le of Ocean said.
While some students don’t mind the pancake and waffle day lunch line, it can completely alter other students’ lunch periods.
Junior Ella Weiss of Tinton Falls describes her experience as more chaotic.
“I just think it’s really annoying sometimes because the line gets so long,” Weiss said. ”There’s no separation between freshmen and sophomores and juniors and seniors, so the whole entire school spends basically half their lunch period getting lunch, and it’s kind of useless, a waste of time. It’s competitive and cut throat. ”
Freshman Honora Griffiths feels unaffected by the disadvantages.
“I feel like everybody anticipates that, so I don’t really mind it. It doesn’t really bother me, I’ve never had a conflict with clubs or anything” said Griffiths.
The Pomptonian servers at CHS work hard to prepare these special occasion lunches for the students. Pomptonian employee, Christina Magnifico, describes her experience preparing all the food.
“It’s very stressful, there’s a lot of work to do, everything is homemade, and with the abundance of students who come and get food, it’s just a little more stressful. We’ve got to make the batter, it’s cooking as you guys are pretty much waiting for it too, but as long as the students like it, we’ll do it,” Magnifico said.
Freshman Anna Claps of Colts Neck supports the newfound specialty at CHS and hopes it will continue.
“It seems like a special occasion even if it’s not really. And also, who doesn’t love pancakes and waffles?” Claps said.
