The Class of 2024 found gold at the end of the rainbow as they continued their lead after the second day of Spirit Week on Tuesday, Mar. 19.
To fit the theme of Green Day, Communications High School (CHS) students dressed in either festive green St. Patrick’s Day outfits or as the popular punk band of the same name.
The sophomores and juniors received the maximum of 20 points for their participation, with the seniors scoring 18 and the freshmen scoring 15.
At the start of lunch, students swarmed the cafeteria for the reveal of the daily scavenger hunt list. Students ran around the school in search of items such as green calculators, green sponges and even a video of 15 students Irish step dancing. In the end, the sophomores finished first, adding another 20 points to their total score with the juniors placing second, the seniors third and the freshman fourth.
After not receiving full participation and being in last place at the end of Monday, the sophomores had to step up their game. Sophomore Vice President Isabella San Filippo of Wall is glad to see the hard work paying off.
“I was so hyped that we came in first for Scav!” San Filippo said. “Everyone had such amazing participation in dressing up as Green Day.”
As the scavenger hunt concluded, each grade prepared for the main event of the day: a St. Patrick’s Day-themed relay race. Eight representatives from each class worked through a series of challenges and battled to finish first. In the first leg, participants had to throw three gold coins into a small pot of gold before moving on to the next leg, where another team member had to search through a bucket of Cheerios to find a marshmallow while blindfolded. During leg three, students had to sort Skittles by color while wearing oven mitts. Afterward, students would then have to eat an entire plate full of mashed potatoes before the remaining team members could move on to solving the riddle. Seniors came out on top finishing in first place, with the sophomores, freshmen, and juniors following in 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively.
Senior Kiera Young of Neptune participated in the second leg of the relay, helping achieve her grade’s victory in the main event for the second day in a row.
“Honestly it felt like I’d never find that marshmallow in the Cheerios, but when I finally did, it was awesome,” Young said. “Cheering on my friends, especially Carl with the mashed potato race was super fun and I’m just glad I didn’t have to do that part!”
After the conclusion of the day’s events, the seniors lead with 121 points, followed by the juniors with 105 points. The sophomores follow closely behind with 100 points, with the freshman in fourth with 93 points.
After moving up one place since Monday, the sophomores hope to continue to challenge the competition and place first in more events as the week progresses.
“I was so proud that sophomores brought it today!” San Filippo said. “I definitely think we can keep it up and pull through!”
With the scores being so close, Spring Spirit Week is still anyone’s game. The theme for Wednesday is “On Wednesday We Wear Pink” and the event is Gaga Ball.
