Wednesday, March 20 marked the middle of Spring Spirit Week at Communications High School(CHS), and students showed their spirit by sporting their best pink outfit and participating in the Gaga Ball tournament.
Inspired by the hit movie “Mean Girls” Spirit Week day three’s theme was “On Wednesdays, we wear pink.” Sophomores and juniors took the lead scoring 20 points each for theme participation, closely followed by the seniors with 18 points and the freshman with 15 points.
Sophomore Council Vice President Isabella San Filippo of Wall is proud of the sophomores’ participation this week.
“I think we’re doing really well with participation,” San Filippo said. “Everyone is dressing up and it was awesome seeing everyone in green or pink the past two days.”
During lunchtime, each grade went around looking for items to be the first to complete the daily scavenger hunt. Items included 10 erasers, a pair of pink socks, a pink folder and a program from the CHS Fashion Show.
The sophomores were excited to be declared the winner of the scavenger hunt for the second day in a row, adding 20 points to their score. Seniors followed them with 15 points, the juniors took 10 and the freshmen scored five.
After the results of the scavenger hunt and theme participation, some freshmen voiced their concerns about getting enough points to take the lead, including Freshman Zachary Erbe of Neptune.
“I don’t think the freshmen will make a comeback because with the back to back losses of Scav and lack of participation, we probably won’t make it ahead,” Erbe said. “For the rest of the week, I hope we win at least one scav and do good in lip sync.”
Closing out the events for the day was the Gaga tournament. Each grade chose six participants, three boys and three girls, to play the most popular sport in CHS: Gaga Ball. The event was ran by choosing two grades out of a hat to kick off the tournament.
The first game was sophomores versus seniors with the sophomores coming out on top, followed by the juniors’ victory against the freshmen. In a game to determine third and fourth place winners, the seniors triumphed over the freshmen, earning 10 and five points respectively. In the final round, the juniors clinched 20 points in conquering the sophomores, who earned 15 points.
After the points from the day were added up, Wednesday’s final scores placed seniors in the lead with 164 points, the juniors and sophomores in a second place tie with 155 points and the freshmen in fourth place with 118 points.
The juniors are happy about their win in Gaga Ball but upset with the day’s final score. Junior class council member Molly McCarthy of Manasquan thinks their win today was much needed, but is frustrated with a tie.
“I’m so grateful for our amazing Gaga team for securing our win today! I think we as a grade needed some motivation; it really lifted our spirits today.” McCarthy said. “I’m a little frustrated because if it weren’t for the [sophomores’] extra five Spring Fling points, we would have five points between us. However, I’m ready to get back ahead.”
On the other hand, the sophomores are assured they will be able to pull ahead of the juniors. Sophomore Brody Salowe of Ocean Township believes that if they keep winning events, they should be able to come out on top.
“I feel very confident about being tied with the juniors because I know that the sophomore class is going to keep winning and win lip sync,” Salowe said.
Tomorrow’s theme will bring out students’ best floral outfits or superhero costumes for Flower Power versus Superpower, which will be paired with Balloon Pop. With all the scores being so close together, Thursday and Friday will be the crucial deciders of the winners.
