There is a certain thrill that comes from watching sports, cheering for acquired points, wearing sporting gear with your team’s colors and hosting watch parties for that huge game.
Fans of New York teams, however, often have to cut this fanfare short due to losses that drag their teams out of the running for championships, but this sports season is a whole different ball game.
New York teams, such as the Rangers, Yankees and Knicks have had impressive seasons so far this year, and fans are showing their support.
The Rangers, who finished in first place in the Metropolitan Division, have brought themselves to round three of the Stanley Cup Final. Earning this spot was no easy feat, as round two consisted of six of the seven possible games against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Facing the Rangers in round three are the Florida Panthers, who are currently tied at two games apiece.
Sophomore Shawn Ribiero of LongBranch has always been a Rangers fan, so this season could mean lots of excitement if his team wins.
“I’m very hopeful because this season is still going, and they’re doing strong, so I’m hopeful that they’ll come out on top,” Ribeiro said.
Multiple Rangers players have also won awards this season, such as Artemi Panarin winning Most Valuable Player from the Team Awards, and Jacob Trouba, the team captain, winning the Mark Messier Leadership Award.
Many Rangers fans are hoping for the first Stanley Cup win since 1994, which isn’t too far out of their reach.
The Knicks have also had an amazing season, relying on players like Jalen Brunson and Donte DiVincenzo for many points that would carry them to game seven against the Pacers.
Even though this game resulted in a loss, the team’s overall season has been much better than previous years.
Freshman Sofie Grodman of Sea Bright is hopeful for a better season next year as the Knicks’ star players continue to improve.
“Next year they’ll be back,” Grodman said. “Their best players were hurt, but now they’ll be ready.”
If the Knicks hold on to many of their current players, next season could possibly be their first championship since 1973.
Another New York team, the Yankees, have also had an incredible season this year so far. After acquiring players like Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo, the team has become a powerhouse in the league.
Freshman Max Estrada of Tinton Falls, keeps up with the Yankees’ games regularly and has high hopes for the upcoming season.
“I think they’re doing amazing; I think it’s a great team this year,” Estrada said, “I think they can make it all the way.”
On the other hand, health and fitness educator Jennifer Baldaccini thinks it is a little early to determine the success of the Yankees.
“They’re off to a pretty good start, [but] it’s early though,” Baldaccini said, “Hopefully they can stay strong and win a World Series.”
Overall, New York teams have had impressive seasons this year, leaving many fans hoping for the ultimate win, whatever title that may carry.
