As the school year draws to a close, students and faculty will once again compose their battle cries and smear their face paint in preparation for the annual Color Wars, set for Friday, June 1.
While Color Wars traditionally lasts for the school day, this year it will extend into the evening with the Post Color Wars Dance, hosted by SkillsUSA. Senior Brian Murphy of West Long Branch, president of SkillsUSA, said the dance doubles as a fundraiser for the Skills trip in June to Kansas City.
Murphy said Color Wars is a “convenient” excuse for a dance, and he hopes there will be a good turnout. The winning Color Wars team will receive free food at the dance.
Senior Carly Ferreira of Manalapan, president of the Student Government Association, said Color Wars has changed a lot this year. There are new competitions, a new tug-of-war setup, and the positions of team captains have become a senior privilege.
Ferreira said SGA decided to elect seniors as captains because it is their last Color Wars and they will have more initiative to show spirit, thus inspiring their team.
Senior Dylan Mendelson of Shrewsbury said he thinks the PCW Dance is a “good idea,” as it will be fun for seniors to have “one last school dance.”
Freshman Margaret Svikhart, also of Shrewsbury, said that although students in her grade do not know what to expect for their first Color Wars, “most people are excited.”
What’s the final score on Color Wars?
“It’s impossible not to have a good time,” Mendelson said.
Students can find their team assignments on the cafeteria bulletin boards. To get their T-shirts, they should contact their team captains.
