The Sophomore Class elected its governing council for the 2013-14 school year today, including President Johnny Callaghan of Brielle, Vice President Sarah Takash of Brielle and council members Julia Harvey of Howell, Sangamithra “Mithu” Sankaranarayanan of Englishtown and Allison Wheeler of Wall.
The Class of 2014 will hold elections Thursday and the Class of 2015 will elect its officers Friday.
In all, 10 freshman candidates delivered speeches to their class today in the cafeteria.
“You won two Spirit Weeks, you have close to $3,000 in your class account and you’ve had some very successful movie nights this year,” class adviser Kelly Harmon told the class.
The candidates outlined their goals, including implementing more communication over social media.
“Some of the candidates on SGA mentioned sending out weekly emails and I think this would be beneficial to our council,” freshman Emma McCaffrey of Middletown said in her speech.
Candidate Isabella Olaguera of Ocean agreed, promising to frequently update the Class of 2016 Facebook page as well as put a class bulletin board in place with summaries of every council meeting.
“You will always be able to stay involved and in the loop,” Olaguera said.
Other candidates incorporated humor into their speeches to earn votes from classmates. Callaghan was one of them.
“I have the eye of the tiger when competing and won’t stop striving to achieve my goals,” Callaghan said.
Sankaranarayanan started her speech by congratulating all freshmen for “managing to not drop out.”
The remaining candidates discussed issues of class organization, advertising to upperclassmen and winning all eight Spirit Weeks as time progresses.
