The class of 2013 will graduate at 2 p.m. Wednesday, having executed their senior prank in the parking lot on Friday before school.
The members of the class wore red and gathered in the front parking lot to “protest” things they dislike about the school.
Senior McKenzie Pavacich of Ocean said the prank came about as an homage to the teachers union’s Friday morning gatherings last year, which were held to protest the lack of a labor contract. Pavacich said the seniors were protesting “the general needs of the school that are never met, like the contracts.”
Students displayed picked signs to denote their grievances with the school, from Mike DeSocio of Middletown’s “Less Books, More Cameras!” to Adam Dorfman of Millstone’s “Finals No! Bagels Yes!”
“This is our last-ditch attempt at a senior prank,” said Taylor Walters of Interlaken, “but it turned into just a general protest to avoid reprimanding, and also to avoid our actual concerns before we leave.”
James Gleason said he had not suspected the prank, but that he found it interesting.
“Quite a red-shirt day today that we have,” he said.
As the prank continued, Gleason said that he had no concerns about the students or their assembly. “As long as they are peacefully demonstrating, and staying out of the way of the buses, then we are all good today,” he said.
Gleason added that he expected all seniors to be on time for first period.
