By SKYE HOWES – For the second day of this year’s Fall Spirit Week, students dressed up for Fancy Day and cheered on their classmates in the “Mummy Wrap” competition. This was the first time that Mummy Wrap was a lunchtime event for Spirit Week, according to Student Government Association President senior Kevin Milton of Hazlet.
“We wanted to add something Halloween-themed that doubled as a good team-building competition,” said Milton. “It had also been a class council suggestion for an event, so it satisfied two pieces of criteria.”
Almost the whole school showed their spirit by adorning ornate clothing, which ranged from suits and ties to dresses and skirts.
“I think it’s a great way for people to express themselves,” said freshman Abigail Karl of Monmouth Beach. “It’s really cute and funny to see the guys get more excited about Fancy Day than the girls do.”
The lunchtime Mummy Wrap competition required three students from each grade. Each team used a roll of toilet paper to “mummify” their teammate, who would then run through a stretch of cones, rip off their toilet paper and race back to their team.
The Mummy Wrap began as Eminem’s “Rap God” blasted through loudspeakers and each team struggled to fully envelop their “mummy” in toilet paper. Ultimately, the senior team – Gwyneth Wilkins of Sea Girt, Anna McComb of Howell and Julia Greeley of Avon, – dominated.
“It was a lot of fun. It really was,” said Greeley of the Mummy Wrap.
The sophomores and juniors took second and third place, respectively, with the freshman coming in last for the second day in a row.
Despite their last place finish, the freshman team’s Emmanuella Macri of Freehold kept an upbeat outlook on the competition.
“It’s okay. We’re winning in spirit,” Macri said.
