From Hairspray to History: Halloween costume contest to culminate Fall Spirit Week

Fall Spirit Week’s annual costume contest takes place this Friday, the date of Halloween.

Categories for Halloween costumes include most creative, which alumni Billie Haas of Deal won last year with her Common Application costume. Like Haas, freshman Karoline Winzer of Marlboro will design her Halloween costume this year.

“I don’t exactly know how to describe it, but I just sketched something and I’m going to make it. I call it, ‘I am my own character,” said Winzer.

Others plan to be characters or historical figures this Halloween.

“I am being Tracy Turnblad from Hairspray for Halloween because I love the musical and the style from that era,” said freshmen Courtney Kushnir of Colts Neck.

Junior Bridget Savage of Brielle said she’s been Rosie the Riveter for two years in a row and is unsure of what she’ll be this Halloween. Freshman Abby Coneeny of Wall said she plans to be a gypsy for Halloween.

But Halloween isn’t limited to the school day. According to a survey emailed to the freshman class, 86 percent of responders will be trick-or-treating.

“I’m expecting a lot of people to go all out and hopefully it’ll be really fun,” said Kushnir.
