BY SOPHIA BONIECKI – It seems like the person who follows the rules always gets the short end of the stick these days, and with President Obama’s new immigration policy, those who break the rules have it easier than those who don’t.
President Obama recently announced a new policy that did not go through Congress when it clearly should have.
The new policy allows undocumented immigrants who have been in America for at least five years or who have children that are citizens to apply for a three year stay. This would provide them with legal working papers and the ability to earn a drivers license, pay taxes and gain social security benefits without fear of being deported.
Undocumented immigrants gaining social security benefits could potentially cause these benefits to fail. At the moment, the amount of people earning social security benefits is greater than the amount of people giving money to the program. If we add another few million retirees to the 59 million already in the program, people will receive less money until the program completely fails.
Additionally, how is this policy fair? There are people who sometimes have to wait years in order to immigrate to the United States legally, so why do some people get to come here without the wait and receive the same benefits?
This policy is not fair to people who are already United States citizens, and it is definitely not fair to those who have been waiting to legally become United States citizens. Additionally, it will be incredibly difficult to change this policy, but future presidents should definitely try.
