With Fuller House on Netflix, My So-Called Life streaming on Hulu and Donald Trump in the White House, 90s-inspired pop culture is here to stay, especially in the fashion world. Throughout 2016, slip dresses, Calvin Klein and velvet seemed ubiquitous, and many CHS students and celebrities alike are taking part.

A popular combination is slip dresses over t-shirts. Kim Kardashian’s daughter North West has been spotted in the look on several occasions. Junior Caroline Savage of Brielle also supports the pairing.

“The idea of just throwing a slip on over a t shirt and it being a completed look is really awesome,” Savage said. “The looks from that time, even though it was only 20 years ago, are really interesting and fun and I think the fact that they’re coming back is indicative of an even bigger sort of return to old styles.”

Along with the laid-back silhouettes of the ‘90s, popular brands from the decades are also regaining popularity. Calvin Klein, specifically, has been on the rise in the past few years. Models and celebrities such as Kendall Jenner, Justin Bieber, Kendrick Lamar and Bella Hadid have starred in the brand’s “My Calvins” campaign to promote the popular range of underwear.

While Calvin Klein underwear isn’t seen on a daily basis at CHS, the ‘90s are still prevalent here with the fabric staple of the decade: velvet. Junior Mary Lykes of Howell was surprised to see the amount of velvet at the 2017 Winter Ball.

“Personally, I’m a fan of velvet,” Mary Lykes said. “I showed up to Winter Ball in velvet thinking I was original for wearing it… Half the people in attendance were wearing it, and I was shocked.”

As 2017 gets into full swing, the 1990s are present on the streets of L.A. and in the CHS hallways.
