Pirate hats, parrots, leis and sunglasses were all worn today at Communications High School (CHS), for day 3 of Fall Spirit Week on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
While students of CHS were rocking their “pirate crews” and “private cruise” apparel, excitement was building amongst the grades for the coveted dodgeball tournament.
The teams included six people per grade, and the order of play was determined by a hat-draw, with the first draw being the juniors against the freshmen.
Despite being the youngest, the freshmen quickly eliminated the current reigning champions of Spirit Week, the junior Class of 2025, with five players remaining on the court at the end.
Hannah Smolinski of Little Silver expressed her defeat in the junior dodgeball team losing to the freshman.
“It was interesting to me how all five freshmen remained in the game until the very end,” Smolinski said. “It could’ve been more hype but dodgeball kicked it off so hopefully the rest of the week will be more like the average spirit week at CHS.”
The second matchup for the day pitted the sophomores versus the seniors. Before the tournament, the seniors were in second place, with 67 points, and the sophomores in third place, with 52 points.
Both grades fought until the very end, and in a thrilling battle, the winners of round two were the seniors. This meant the final round would be the seniors versus the freshmen.
The sophomores and juniors went head-to-head for third place in a passionate dodgeball game resulting in the juniors coming out on top.
In the final round, though new to CHS spirit weeks, the freshmen came out on top and took home the 20 points to their previous total of 35.
After the participation and dodgeball points were tallied, juniors are in the lead with 112 points, seniors in second with 93 points, sophomores in third with 76 points and last are the freshmen with 61 points.
Tomorrow is the fourth day of Spirit Week. The theme is Greece v. Greece and the event is Make-a-Monster. It is still anyone’s game.
