On Friday, Nov. 3, Fall Spirit Week at Communications High School (CHS) concluded with students scrambling to find spatulas, lime green goggles and English muffins.
The theme of the day was Barbie. Students dressed in sparkly cowboy hats, Hawaiian shirts and most importantly, pink. Though a lot of students enjoyed the Barbie theme, there were others with a different perspective.
“The Barbie theme was simple and easy, but I don’t think that the theme was good participation-wise,” sophomore Amelia DeGutis of Wall said. “You can be whatever Barbie you want, and people could manipulate that.”
The event of the day was Super Scav, though the rules had been slightly altered from past years. For this event, the points earned were directly added to the classes’ total points. There were three different categories of items, with some worth five points, three points and one point. Juniors took first with a score of 299 points. Seniors followed with 237 points. Sophomores took third with 228 points and freshmen placed fourth with 165 points.
Super Scav began at 10:45, as students ran down the halls in search of black claw clips, an orange jacket, five purple Sharpies and more.
Students such as sophomore Dylan Glusman went barefoot, taking off her Uggs in efforts to help their class.
“Overall I think that we did good, but we could’ve done better,” Glusman said. “I did my part by giving up my shoes.”
After 30 minutes of trying to find as many items as possible, time was up. Students were anxious to hear who had won, but were forced to wait in anticipation.
Finally, at 2:10, all the classes were called down for a school-wide assembly, where the 2023 Fall Spirit Week winner was announced. The class of 2025 won Spirit Week with 486 points and was granted $225 as a prize. The class had a lead from day one and succeeded in keeping it up until the very end.
Junior Class Treasurer Christie DiNicola of Tinton Falls was ecstatic.
“I feel so amazing!” said DiNicola. “We put so much work into this week, and it feels so great to come together and win something we all had fun doing.”
The seniors placed second with 392 points, winning $150. The sophomores followed them with 346 points, earning $100 as a prize. The freshmen took fourth place with 248 points, earning $25.
Although it was the freshmen’s first taste of Spirit Week at CHS, freshman secretary Katie Mountford of Wall was proud of the grade’s performance.
“The freshman definitely put up a fight,” Mountford said. “I think that in Spring Spirit Week once we get our participation up, and we understand the rules a little bit more, we’ll be some tough competition.”
