Day two of Communication High School’s (CHS) Fall Spirit Week brought out a style clash, as students rocked chunky sweaters representing “Pumpkin Spice Autumn” and neon green for “BRAT Summer”.
The halls were filled with cozy cable knit sweaters, scarves and warm autumn colors while others embraced their inner “BRAT” with neon green tops and popstar outfits. Some students even blended the themes together, mixing green with sweaters and wearing shirts saying “pumpkin’ that”.
Tuesday’s event was the relay race, which consisted of five segments: the spider leg, eyeball toss, needle in a haystack, candy corn balancing and a riddle. For the spider leg portion, a group of four students had to link arms in a circle while squatting and running as fast as they could. Next, three students worked together throwing ping-pong balls, the “eyeballs”, into each other’s buckets five times in a row.
After completing the eyeball toss, the next student was tasked with finding a chopstick in a haystack while blindfolded. In the fourth leg of the relay, a student had to balance candy corn on a popsicle stick held in their mouth, transporting the candy across a short distance, from the haystack to a table until their mini-bucket of candy was empty. Finally, groups of students put their minds together to solve a riddle.
Today’s relay race was a thrilling roller coaster, with the grades battling neck and neck as the rankings shifted at every turn. Each leg of the race brought new challenges, as teams quickly worked together to complete tasks, keeping everyone guessing who would take the lead next.
Junior Alexa Obara of Brielle commented on her excitement for yesterday’s relay.
“I loved how there were different skills required in each part of the relay: a physical portion, a mental challenge and balance. Watching it was really exciting, seeing everyone run from station to station.”
Currently, the seniors are in the lead with 80 points, the juniors are in second with 65 points, the sophomores are right behind them with 63 points and the freshmen have 45 points.
As the week carries on with more exciting themes and challenges, Fall Spirit Week is still anybody’s game.
