A lot was on the line for both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles as they stepped foot in Caesar’s Superdome for the 59th Super Bowl on Sunday Feb. 9. The Chiefs were hoping to complete the first three-peat winning streak in NFL history while the Eagles were looking to avenge their loss to the Chiefs just two years prior. With the Eagles’ addition of Saquan Barkley, their chance at greatness looked better than ever.
The Chiefs failed to impress fans during the Super Bowl LIX as they were completely shut out by the Eagles in the first half 24-0. The Chiefs only had one first down and 23 total yards before halftime.
After both teams exchanged punts to start the game, the Eagles drove down the field to the one-yard line. Jalen Hurts and the Eagles quickly made their way into the end zone for the first score of the game.
The Chiefs started the second quarter with Bryan Cook catching an interception, but Patrick Mahomes set the tone for his teams performance, ensuring that they were forced to punt. The Eagles’ offense capitalized by scoring a field goal and going up by two scores.
Not long after the Eagles scored another touchdown,Mahomes threw an interception to rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean, who ran it back for a touchdown. This pushed all the momentum into the Eagles’ favor and was a key element of their win t.
Before the first half ended, the Eagles scored yet another touchdown to make it a 24-0 lead. Travis Kelce was no help as he was not able to catch a single pass in the first half.
As Kendrick Lamar was getting ready to take the stage, Mahomes and his offense knew that something needed to change fast or there would be no chance at victory.
After the Chiefs’ catastrophic performance in the first half , fans were given a brief break with the Kendrick Lamar halftime show, concluding with the artist singing “Not Like Us.” This set-list selection was controversial, as Lamar is currently involved in an active lawsuit with musical artist Aubrey “Drake” Graham for the original release of the song.
Shortly into the third quarter, Jaylen Hurts shut down all hope for a potential comeback for the Chiefs with a 46 yard bomb to Devonta Smith, making him the first Alabama player to have a receiving touchdown in Super Bowl history. After that, the game was just a slow, painful loss for the Chiefs as the Eagles won their second Lombardi in franchise history.
From Saquon Barkley breaking the single season rushing record to Lamar’s nationally televised exposè, the 59th Super Bowl made history within the Hollywood South.
