Cowbells shook and screams of victory resounded today as Student Government Association president Kiera Brennan announced the Red Team as the winner of Color Wars 2013.
“I never won Color Wars before,” said senior Emily Frazee of Middletown, who co-captained the Red Team. “And to be a captain on a team that wasn’t even going in to win was amazing.”
This year, Color Wars was held a day early due to thunderstorm predictions for the original date. It had only been postponed one other time in the school’s 13-year history.
Both the current and rising SGA councils were involved in the decision, as well as parents and the Wall Township cafeteria service.
“With everyone being flexible and able to move it up a day, it just seemed to make sense,” Principal James Gleason said.
Junior Caroline Palsi of Manasquan agreed with the decision to change the date, and added that it hasn’t significantly affected her experience.
“It was definitely kind of shocking, but I don’t mind because I’m having fun,” Palsi said.
Color Wars 2013 consisted of team chants, which the Yellow Team won, and a tug of war tournament, which the Purple Team won. The competition was followed by a barbecue, which the Parent Student Faculty Association provided.
After lunch, teams went head to head in sports games on the field and more refined activities inside. The event culminated in a pie-eating contest between team captains, Brennan said. Senior Lauren Sorrentino of Sea Bright won the pie-eating contest.
New additions to this year’s Color Wars included Scrabble, taking the place of last year’s Catch Phrase, and a water balloon toss as a substitute for the balloon pop.
“It was just some tweaking of old events,” Brennan said.
The event included a “Monsters Inc”-inspired chalk design for the art challenge. Teams were directed to draw a movie poster on the front sidewalk for the soon-to-be-released prequel, “Monsters University.”
The technology challenge also attracted a crowd in the cafetera. Sophomore Brooke Weber of Howell said she enjoyed watching each team build an original paper airplane and seeing which ones covered the most distance during their flights.
Freshman Lauryn Masciana of Middletown said Color Wars was a positive experience, despite the fact that it was moved forward a day. Other freshmen, including Connor Duffy of Freehold, agreed.
“I’m getting to meet some of the upperclassmen, and it’s a nice way to get out of class,” Duffy said.
