As second period came to a close on Thursday, 11 candidates awaited the familiar beep of the loudspeaker, which would call all freshmen down to the cafeteria to begin their class elections. The elections took place during the DEAR period, and at the end of the day, freshman Kevin Clark of Spring Lake was announced as president.

The Class of 2019 co-advisers, Biology teacher Jeanine Gomez and U.S. History II teacher Sharyn O’Keefe, introduced each candidate before they presented their speeches. Candidates spoke about a variety of topics, but many highlighted the importance of hearing everyone’s opinions.

Freshman Tali Petto of Marlboro, who did not run for council, said she believes the class council will be crucial to class functions.

“I think it’s most important to organize after-school events to bring everyone closer,” Petto said.

After the speeches concluded, each freshman received a ballot to cast five votes. As ballots were collected, students were dismissed for lunch.

At dismissal, the results were announced over the loudspeaker.

Alongside Clark as president, The Class of 2019 elected Kail Ying of Manalapan as vice president. Connor Martin and Kelly Forrester, both of Spring Lake Heights, and Emma Hecht of Wall were elected as council members.

Ying said he is excited to be a part of the council.

“I get to help plan what we do this year, and I get to represent the ever-so-fabulous Class of 2019,” Yang said.
