After decades of celebrities leading lives meant for the public eye, it is no surprise that a mere pregnancy announcement brings excitement to fans in anticipation of a new prodigy. However, many celebrities are now opting to conceal their children’s faces. Just like that, the generational curse of stepping into the spotlight is broken. As it turns out, this choice made by many celebrities, including Blake Lively and Gigi Hadid, is more than just a trend. As technology continues to advance, many worry about the dangers that may await their kids. After several pictures of her children were leaked by paparazzi, Lively released this statement:
“Please stop paying grown-ass men to hide and hunt children… Get with the times.” Junior Emma Checkett of Marlboro agrees with Lively’s statement and believes that the children of celebrities should be hidden from the spotlight.
“I think they should be completely out of the public eye until they have the age and intelligence to decide for themselves whether or not that would be good,” Checkett said.
On the other hand, many celebrities see their fame as an opportunity for their children. Surrounded by connections, this public freedom allows what the internet knows as “nepo babies” to explore their interests freely and to the highest possible extent. Public figures Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are doing just that, supporting 11-year-old North West in all of her extravagant hobbies, like performing at the Hollywood Bowl. Still, the couple remains aware of the impending threats of social media to children, ensuring that every account she is on remains supervised. Sophomore Avery Velho of Middletown touches on the downsides of celebrity children in the public eye, noting that the world will be monitoring their every move.
“They are affected because they have a public reputation, so they get criticized even though they are just kids,” Velho said.
