Frat guys, sorority sisters and Zara Larsson look alikes filled the Communication High School halls for day one of Spring Spirit Week.
Monday’s theme was Lush Life vs. Rush Life, encouraging students to dress up as outfits inspired by Zara Larsson’s 2015 song, “Lush Life,” or dress up as a frat guy or sorority girl.
The accompanying competition was Cupcake Wars, with the theme was May the Fourth Be With You. Each grade created a colorful array of Star Wars-themed cupcakes. Judges evaluated each grade’s set of cupcake look and flavors. The freshman ended up winning the competition with the juniors following behind in second place.
Junior Mimi Fitzgerald of Long Branch, who helped bake her grade’s cupcake and set up the display, was happy with how their presentation came out, but was slightly disappointed with the results.
“I feel like both the set and baking aspect of [the] junior’s did very well, and I am so glad that our presentation executed as well as I wanted it to be,” Fitzgerald said. “Obviously, it is unfortunate that we lost, it sucks, but I am glad that the judges liked our cupcakes.”
Some juniors speculate their loss was caused by a misunderstanding. Junior Tyler Walsh of [town] crafted a Millennium Falcon out of cardboard that many teachers thought was store-bought. Some students attribute their loss to that, while others are happy to make the leaderboard.
Cupcake Wars was not the only mulit-grade competition of the day.. This Spirit Week, a new event has replaced the traditional daily scavenger hunts. Now, students can compete in Dress to Impress, where one student from each grade struts in an outfit that fits the theme for the day. The student with the best ‘fit gains 15 points for their grade. Today, senior Bianca Grann of Freehold won with a fun and colorful “Lush Life” outfit. Junior Kyler LaMonte of [town] also earned his grade 5 points with a sequin and summer look.
With much time left for change, day one ended with the seniors and freshman in a tie, both with 60 points. Juniors are following with 55 and sophomores are in last place with only 35 points. Since it is only the first day, the juniors and sophomores still have a chance to get back into the game and be part of the “symphony.”
