The Class of 2014 Candy Toss team, consisting of Nina Marie Amadeo of Middletown, Matthew Lamb of Howell and Michele Ziobro of Keyport won the event at lunch today, securing a 30 point lead in the overall Spirit Week standings.
“I’m glad to see so many people cheering,” junior Kevin Milton of Hazlet said. “I think [the events] are quite effective as far as raising school spirit goes.”
Each grade volunteered three participants to take part in the Candy Toss. One member of each team stood with their back turned to their other two teammates, throwing candy over their shoulders in the hopes that their counterparts, armed with jack-o-lantern baskets, would catch the candy.
Each grade was assigned a candy. The freshmen were given Crunch Bars, the sophomores had Kit Kats, the juniors had Butterfingers and the seniors had Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. If the class caught their candy, they would earn two points, if they caught another team’s candy, they would receive one point.
Additionally, there were four York peppermint patties in play, each worth five points.
Today’s specified dress code was Crazy Accessory Day. Students including Anna Vernick of Ocean embraced the day with great enthusiasm.
“I finally had an opportunity to wear my wings!” Vernick said, making a gesture towards the pink fairy wings on her back. “I really like getting involved and I think the best way to do that is getting involved myself.”
At the end of the day, the seniors were in first place with 105 points, followed by the sophomores and juniors who were tied with 75 points. The freshmen dropped down in the ranks since yesterday, and currently hold fourth place with 65 points.
Spirit Week will continue tomorrow with a parade and celebration in honor of Halloween.
