Communications High School (CHS), welcomed in the 2025 spring spirit week with childhood character day. Students came up with creative costumes ranging from Goldilocks to Dorothy and construction workers to pigeons; the hallways of CHS were filled with colorful characters. The sophomores and freshmen finished the day with 18 points for theme, while the juniors and seniors pulled ahead with 20 points.
The upperclassmen continued to dominate during the scavenger hunt, leaving seniors on top, juniors following, freshmen pulling ahead to third place and sophomores finishing at the bottom.
The activity to conclude the first day of festivities was Cupcake Wars, a crowd favorite. Teams on each grade worked around the clock preparing a display for 15 cupcakes that followed the childhood theme.
The junior class created a presentation around a childhood classic, the Very Hungry Caterpillar. With an emphasis on green, nature and fruit elements, and a hand-painted display, the junior class placed fourth. Though placing last on day one could be discouraging, juniors, such as CJ Spears of Tinton Falls, remain determined.
“There’s no slowing for us… I’ve always felt our class is made up of some of the most amazing and talented people I’ll ever know in my life. Spirit week is such a great time for us to put those things and ourselves forward,” Spears asserted. “I know I’ll have such warm memories thinking about everything from this week.”
The senior class placed third with a Strawberry Shortcake theme. The display prominently featured pink decor with lots of flowers and spring fruits. Known for their three-year spirit week winning streak, the senior class is definitely living by “last one, best one.”
The freshmen brought their all to their first spring spirit week event with an Alice in Wonderland-themed cupcake display, which included a painted background and a stuffed rabbit to complete the look. The class of 2028 earned second place, a solid start to the week.
Last, but certainly not least, the sophomores placed first in Cupcake Wars. Sophomores Mimi Fitzgerald of Long Branch and Sofia Santillo of Freehold led the team to victory, bringing Charlotte’s Web to life as a farm setting with animal-themed cupcakes. The class president, Sofie Grodman of Seabright, had only high hopes and warm words for her peers.
“We are very grateful for our baking masters, Mimi and Sofia, and are so happy with this win! All the grades did amazing, and we can’t wait to see where the rest of spirit week takes us,” Grodman said.
The final scores leave seniors in first with 65 points and Juniors in last with 50. The sophomores and freshmen are tied for second place with 63 points each, and everyone is excited to see where this spirit week goes.
